What Happens to BAC After a Drink?

Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) describes the amount of alcohol in a person's bloodstream. After a drink, BAC can rise while alcohol is absorbed, reach a peak, and then decline as the body metabolizes and eliminates alcohol.

How to Read the Alcohol Bell Curve

  1. Follow the curve as BAC rises during absorption, reaches its peak, and declines during elimination.
  2. Select a phase to read the approved explanation and support value for that part of the curve.
  3. Review the factors, educational example, and limitations before interpreting the visualization.

Absorption: Why BAC Rises

Alcohol is absorbed into your bloodstream through the stomach and small intestine. While absorption is still outpacing elimination, BAC is increasing and the curve climbs. How quickly it climbs varies with the amount and pace of drinking, food, and individual circumstances.

Peak BAC: The Highest Point on the Curve

The peak is where BAC stops rising and begins to fall. On this curve it reaches its highest point typically 30–90 minutes after your last drink. That range is an approximate reference, not a prediction — the timing may sit earlier or later for a given person.

Elimination: Why BAC Declines Over Time

Once absorption slows, the body continues metabolizing alcohol at a relatively constant rate — an average of about 0.015% BAC per hour. BAC declines and, as elimination continues, moves back toward 0.00%. Time is what drives the decline.

Why the Same Drinks Can Produce Different BAC Results

Two people can drink the same amount and reach very different BAC results. Absorption, distribution, and metabolism differ from person to person, so the same drinks do not produce the same curve.

The amount and pace of drinking, food, body size and composition, medications, and other individual circumstances can each shift how quickly BAC rises, how high it peaks, and how long the decline takes. That is why the factors below describe general influences on the shape of the curve rather than an amount of BAC. Hydration is listed because dehydration may increase BAC; drinking water does not speed the body's elimination of alcohol.Time, your body, and other factors matter.
